I couldn't believe it when I read it. The newest episode of the Twilight Saga - New Moon - had the largest opening day gross ever. Better even than one of the greatest movies ever in The Dark Knight. How did this happen???
Here's the hard and fast. New Moon took in a staggering $72.7 million on its first day of release, dethroning The Dark Knight which previously held the record with $67.2 million. On the plus side, New Moon only walked away with 3rd place when it comes to biggest opening weekend ever. The Dark Knight still holds that honor with $158.4 million. Spider-Man 3 follows with $151.1 million. New Moon came in at $142.8 million. At least it didn't topple all the records.
After reading a good number of reviews online, it would seem as if the driving market behind this movie doing so well would be the screaming teenage girls who are in love with either Edward (Robert Pattinson - whose face I want to hit with a shovel) or Jacob (Taylor Lautner - who is currently going out with Taylor Swift... I wonder if the media has a clever nickname for them yet. I'd call them Taylor Squared) and squeal any time one of them comes on the screen. If the critics are to be trusted, the movie is actually rather boring unless you are an uber-fan.
Anyway, it's possible that the critics are wrong. But, a friend of mine was forced to watch the original Twilight last night, and he hated it so much, he refuses to even speak of it. Sounds like a GREAT movie.
My coworkers, on the other hand, are still pressuring me to read the first book. I have caved to their pressure and will be giving it a shot sometime in the near (far) future, so expect something about that whenever I happen to get around to it.
The Dark Knight will always be a better movie than anything involving an angsty love story.
