The big news from over the weekend was that the email systems for the University of East Anglia's Hadley Climate Research Unit were hacked. The hacker released about 61MB worth of data on the Internet - hundreds of files that detail some startling things about the global warming movement.
The file itself has spent the weekend roaring across the Internet as folks all over the world check out the content of the hundreds of leaked files.
After the file was initially leaked, people were pretty sure that it was a genuine file - not a hoax, in other words. The CRU has since come out and confirmed the hack (by canceling all their passwords), which pretty much proves that the files are legit. What's most fascinating about this story is not that the CRU was hacked, but, rather, what the files reveal about the internal goings-on in that place specifically and the global warming movement in general. Keep in mind that CRU is one of the leading groups when it comes to human impact on the environment.
Watts Up With That has posted several of the emails that were released. Reading through we can see all kinds of mentions of covering stuff up. No, really. If you parse through the actual file, which you can find here, there are several surprising strings of conversation about exaggerating statistics, ignoring studies, etc, etc, all in the name of furthering the "global warming is a real threat" cause. Really, it boils down to the following: Global warming is a hoax. Just kidding... maybe. Of course, there will have to be investigations into just how deep the treachery goes. It's possible that such an investigation could completely discredit the entire global warming movement. These files provide proof that those in charge of researching global warming were editing and censoring to prove their point of view, rather then giving us the complete, unaltered truth.
Of course, popular media has to pick up on this story for it really to go anywhere. Regardless of what an investigation into the practices of the researchers at CRU turns up, there is enough evidence in the leaked files to prove that information has been withheld and misreported. The folks responsible for these lies need to be held accountable for their actions, and the only way that will ever happen is if people become aware of it. So, feel free to spread the word on this one, folks - this story demands a proper and thorough investigation, but that won't happen unless public opinion says it needs to.
